My name is Valerie Pelletier and I haven’t always been a birth worker. The first years of my working life were spent in hotels and restaurants. When I was pregnant with my first child, I was put on preventative leave from my job as a chef. “Not working” was not a concept that I was familiar with, so I went about the business of making pregnancy my “job”. I read, I researched, I watched documentaries, I assisted panel discussions, I took my new job very seriously. I felt so ready to birth, I was fearless.
Birth had some lessons in store for me. I cherish that day and night as the most transformative experience in my life. Birth took everything that I thought about myself and turned it inside out. I came out on the other side having met my maker and with a brand new definition of who I was. It humbled me and strengthened me all at once. After having recovered, I knew that one day, I needed to work in the birthing world.
Some years passed, I had a second child and once again birth shook me to my core. It look me some time to adjust to the reality of a life with two children, and as they got older, my birthwork dream started coming back up to the surface. It was finally time to make a move and take the plunge. I trained with MotherWit Doula Care, took a Breastfeeding Essentials class, and trained with Gena Kirby in her insightful Rebozo for Birth workshop.
When I am not out doing the doula, I can be found at the ballet studio, in the kitchen cooking for my family and clients, or scrolling on my phone, pretending that the laundry will fold itself.
